08 January 2011 / Gullivers / Manchester
By Ged Camera

With one all-day music event ongoing a short stagger across the road at the Castle, itís time to get the other hand stamped and nip into Gulliverís. Now settled in the Northern Quarter venue after the closure of the Saki bar and a one-off towards the end of 2010 in Fallowfield, Underachievers Please Try Harder also have a decent crowd in.

Douga - a rather different outing for PLANK!'s Jonathan Winbolt-Lewis - are part way through their set. Their melancholy and smouldering output seems to fit into the Neil Young territory, somewhere between After the Goldrush and before Like a Hurricane.

Dry ironic outpourings are despatched by Uranium Lake. Unless youíre from Carlisle though, the subtlety and nuances may be lost. Instead you may wish to enjoy the attractive pop sounds that the trio have honed from regular and frequent performances over the last few years.

Closing proceedings are The ABC Club, who have been quietly gathering plaudits over the past couple of years. They group quietly to one side of the stage before moving to take up their stage positions in an orderly procession. Vocalist Zandra Klievens stands at the microphone, her hands clasped behind her back, adopting a female version of the classic no-nonsense frontman's poise. Itís a quietly understated manner, which appears to run through the band. There are no dramatic musical crashes, or vocals being spewed at the microphone; instead they seem to be deliberately suppressing a biting sense of humour whilst producing neatly despatched packets of roundly formed songs that reflect their quiet effectiveness. The plaudits are increasing, and rightly so.
