:: Doves :: New Order ::
26 May 2002 / Le Zenith / Paris
By Alex Staszko (assisted by Wayne Boothman)

A mad weekend away in Paris, including a very apt bizarre love triangle involving fisticuffs, a 9 hour stint in the same bar during which, some pillock paid the barman 20 quid to play "The Perfect Kiss" ! a Fred West look-alike & a walk around a Paris suburb trying to find beer at 12 :30 am.

Paris saw a contingent of 23 Brits (& 6500 French) witness a storming, opening gig of the tour, played in an inflatable aircraft hanger.

Doves came on to an apathetic response at 8:20 with a load of French people asking us who they were. "Pounding" was the opener followed by "There Goes The Fear" - its really a shorter version of their recent Academy set, including "Words" from the latest LP & a storming "Here It Comes". Some of the French audience seemed to enjoy it, we thought they were fantastic, but didn’t seem to get into it till one of us requested "Space Face" (the 1st Sub Sub single).

New Orders 1st gig of an 8 date jaunt around Europe started with the customary "Crystal" & "Transmission", but the band have been busy-ish, rehearsing stuff not played for years, including a version of "Brutal" from "The Beach" soundtrack.

A fast "Atmosphere" was ended with Barney slagging off the rest of the band as usual and with his usual references to Man Utd & David Beckham - on a football theme Phil Cunningham, Gillian’s stand in wore a French Football top with 5 Cunningham on the back. Barneys French has got no better “Oue est Le Rouge Loumierre district “ seemed to confuse most people! As did a certain rather large breasted Manchester school teacher flashing her rather large assets at a confused Hooky!

A stunning "She’s Lost Control" got its first airing since 1985 & they even encored with "Digital" from the Factory Sampler. But not before local legend Alan Wise tried to keep the audience going with his not so sharp repartee. After the usual "Blue Monday", during which Hooky’s drums packed up, the band went off & came back on after the house lights came up to play "Your Silent Face" in which Hooky’s Bass amp then packed in leaving him nothing to do, except hand out free champagne to the audience -Posing Twat! Mind you it’s better than the fruit Barney handed out before the encore I suppose.

All in all a fucking great gig!!!

After trying to unsuccessfully raid the backstage area of alcohol, we retired to a local bar where one of our number, Colin decided to fall asleep, so we just had to draw on his head with red lipstick -he left for the airport this morning still oblivious to this fact & is probably at work now with a big red bald head!!!!!!!

Set list- Crystal / Transmission / Regret / Ceremony / 60 Miles An Hour / Atmosphere / Brutal / Close Range / She's Lost Control / Bizarre Love Triangle / True Faith / Temptation / Love will tear us apart

Encore - Digital / Rock The Shack / Blue Monday

2nd Encore - Your Silent Face
