WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG ? * joint single of the week *
:: The Courteeners ::
14 January 2008 / Universal / Loog / 1 Trk CD
By JA

Of all the bands in Manchester, The Courteeners really made my 2007. Amidst a raging snipe fest , the severity of which hasn’t been seen on the MM messageboard for at least five years, The Courteeners preceded to whip up a storm of controversy (and accompanying relative success) purely on the basis of one single. Whichever way you look at it, Liam Fray can write a bloody good pop song and in all quarters that’s really all that counts. Never mind the fact that Fray and his merry band come from the wrong side of the scene, are outspoken and appeal to a whole generation of diehard music lovers who are barely old enough to see them in clubs. Most bands would rip their arms off with their teeth to get a sniff of that, yet when The Courteeners wrap this all up with the charming, slightly drunken, indie rumbles of “What Took You So Long”, it’s almost as though they’ve lit a rather large Cuban cigar and issued the parting words; “Fuck Off”...Momentous stuff from a band destined for very big things.
