21 January 2008 / Matador Records / 12 Trk edited CD
By Manuel Ecostos

Chan Marsall is back and this is her second covers album, although by no means a sequel to her astutely titled “The Covers Record”. This time it’s a collection of modern standards, from Sinatra’s “New York” to Joplin’s “Woman Left Lonely”. Power intersperses the album with two original compositions of her own. It’s a slow moving, often emotive record and with the able support of Jim White (Dirty Three), Gregg Forman (Delta 72) and Judah Bauer (John Spencer) it’s no wonder that the soundtrack is shimmering and glowing from the gutter with a heartfelt passion. “Lord, Help The Poor & Needy” (originally performed by Jessie Mae Hemphill) is a particular high point and forcing Chan’s vocals into the lower register is a master-stroke.
