DIGGIN DEEP * demo of the week *
:: Bye Bye Johnny ::
21 January 2008 / Demo / 3 Trk CD
By Manuel Ecostos

This welcome second demo from Rochdale’s Bye Bye Johnny is long overdue and it’s a devastating pleasure to report that they’ve surpassed the potential of their debut. This recording is rather oddly mixed and mastered, but it doesn’t stop the genius of “Diggin Deep” bursting with intricate, clever guitar twists and short snappy themes, that somehow mix the joyful post punk pop of the Buzzcocks with the jangly, rattling guitars of the modern beat scene. “Carry Me” is just another blow you away track. For many bands even this second would be a result to be content with – yet Bye Bye Johnny use it as an exercise to prove they can hold the pace and still wrap up a successful mix of guitar themes and superbly constructed indie sorties. Their hometown is celebrated on “Rochdale” a wiry homage to 70’s tower blocks, bus stations and life at the edge of Manchester conurbation. This band have lot to offer on all fronts but more importantly, prove they have a potential beyond current fashions. Still very much ones to watch..
