FALLING OFF THE LAVENDER BRIDGE
:: Lightspeed Champion ::
28 January 2008 / Domino / 12 Trk CD
By JA

It seems to have been a long time coming, but Dev Hynes escapades as Lightspeed Champion are literally a million miles away from the part he played in the explosive, shambolic, incendiary Test Icicles. Instead “Falling Off The Lavender Bridge” is a seriously successful collection of organic ballad based pop steeped in indie, country and folk melodies. The album is made up of tracks he’s quietly written and catalogued over the last three years before holing up with Saddle Creek’s producer Mike Moggis (Bright Eyes etc). Opening with “Number One” and single “Galaxy Of The Lost” is good enough, but deeper into the album “Midnight Surprise” and the indie flavoured “I Could Have Done This Myself” all point to music with a deeper, justified longevity. On the pacier tracks like “Dry Lips” Hynes mixes in classical arrangements with a driving beat and his lightly searching vocal lines - and when he duets with Emmy The Great the results are rather spectacular.
